Long time section stalwart and “committed” motorbiker Eddie Pennycook’s 80th birthday could not be allowed to pass without some event to celebrate.    Steve & Irene Pennycook organised a surprise bike run and invited many of his section friends. We all met at Steve & Irene's house for a quick bite before going out on our run.  Eddie was very much taken by surprise and was touched that we had all had made the effort to celebrate his eightieth.  Barrie had made it all the way from Haddington on his bike and still had energy for the run! It was really nice that Mike & Jen and Victor & Celia, also from Haddington, were able to join us. We had eight bikes in attendance with five of them being made by AJS & Matchless.   Perhaps some of us are not entirely prepared for the new season as mechanical problems meant not everyone had access to a working classic on the day.

The ride out took place on a beautiful afternoon with the sun shining and the weather mild.  We headed north out of Kirkcaldy up to Leslie through the Lomond Hills into Falkland then round past Loch Leven and back to Kirkcaldy, estimated distance about 60 miles.  The countryside was just beginning to turn green and the sleepy Fife villages were relatively quiet as the tourist season has not yet got underway, which all led to a sparkling run to launch our 2009 season.

When we returned we tucked into a lovely buffet prepared in our absence by Irene, ably assisted by Liz Glover, who didn’t want to miss the occasion despite her husband Steve being at work in Bristol. We all had a good chinwag while enjoying the party fare and drifted away towards sunset in case our temperamental classic lights let us down on the journey home.

At our Section Meeting we were given more details on our September (4th&5th) Weekend at the Roy Bridge Hotel from Denis Jackson and it sounds ideal.  A deposit of £10 per person is payable to secure your place.  The Section would like to make it clear that this weekend is not just for the “usual suspects” but is open to anyone who wants to join us in exploring this part of the Scottish Highlands, however, to avoid disappointment it’s always best to book early.
